The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every vehicle. This API decodes that code into manufacturer specifications: make, model, year, body style, engine, and transmission when the source reports them.
This is a VIN decoder, not a vehicle history report. It does not return accidents, theft records, salvage/title brands, odometer history, auction records, or previous owners. Those come from title and insurance databases, not from the VIN itself.
Use it to identify what a vehicle is (specs), not what happened to it (history). Typical jobs: validate a listing, pre-fill make/model/year, or enrich a form from a VIN.
Coverage is strongest for US VINs. Europe and world lookups return a thinner spec set and may miss year or engine on some manufacturers, especially recent EVs.
Input is the VIN. Output is manufacturer-reported specs (make, model, year, engine, transmission, body) when available.
Note: The information is reported by the manufacturer / official decode sources. It is not a Carfax-style history file. If a field is missing, the source did not publish it for that VIN.
Marketplaces and dealers: Confirm make, model, and year from the VIN on a listing before you publish or price it.
Insurtech / quoting: Decode the vehicle so a quote starts from the right specs. This API does not tell you if the car was in an accident.
Fleets and intake forms: Turn a VIN into structured make/model/year instead of asking the user to type it.
Research: Aggregate manufacturer specs across a VIN list. Not ownership or crash history.
Besides API call limitations per month, Europe and world coverage is thinner than US. Missing year/engine on some EU or EV VINs is a source limit, not a plan limit.
A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every vehicle. It encodes manufacturer specs such as make, model, and year. It does not encode accident, theft, or title history.
It decodes a VIN into manufacturer specifications: make, model, year, engine, transmission, and body when the source reports them. It is not a vehicle history report.
USA, Europe, world, a lite decode, and a glass-parts lookup. USA coverage is typically the richest. Europe and world can return fewer fields.
Manufacturer-reported specs for the VIN: make, model, year, engine, transmission, and body style when available. It does not return accidents, theft, salvage brands, or previous owners.
Dealerships can confirm make, model, and year from a VIN before listing or pricing a car. It does not replace a history report for accidents or title brands.
The 17-character VIN. That is the only identifier you need for the decode endpoints.
Each endpoint returns detailed vehicle information based on the VIN provided. The USA endpoint includes data like make, model, year, and engine type. The Europe endpoint provides similar details but focuses on European vehicles, while the World endpoint covers vehicles globally, including manufacturer details and specifications.
Key fields in the response data include VIN, make, model, year, body style, engine type, transmission, and manufacturer details. For example, the USA endpoint may return fields like "Make": "VOLVO" and "Model Year": "2013".
The response data is structured in JSON format, with key-value pairs representing vehicle attributes. For instance, a typical response might include fields like "Make", "Model", "Year", and "Engine Type", making it easy to parse and utilize programmatically.
Each endpoint provides comprehensive vehicle details, including manufacturer, model, year, body class, engine specifications, and transmission type. The USA endpoint may also include mileage and safety features, while the World endpoint covers global manufacturers.
The data is sourced from manufacturers and automotive databases that report vehicle specifications. This ensures that the information is accurate and up-to-date, reflecting the details provided by the vehicle manufacturers.
Users can customize their requests by specifying the VIN for the desired vehicle. Each endpoint is designed to handle any valid VIN, allowing users to retrieve specific information relevant to that vehicle without additional parameters.
Validating marketplace listings, pre-filling intake forms, and starting an insurance quote from the right specs. Not identifying stolen cars or accident history.
Map make, model, and year into your app for verification or inventory. Do not treat a successful decode as proof the vehicle has a clean title or no accidents.
No. This API only decodes manufacturer specs from the VIN. It does not include accidents, theft, salvage, odometer, auctions, or previous owners. For US safety recalls we are shipping that on VIN Data API, not here.
