US baby name trends from SSA data: ranks since 1880, all 50 states, top lists, risers, variants.
Each endpoint returns various data related to US baby names, including yearly counts, ranks, state-specific data, top names, risers and fallers, spelling variants, and historical trends. For example, the "GET A name yearly national counts" endpoint provides total counts, peak years, and yearly series for names since 1880.
Key fields include "name," "sex," "totalCount," "yearsListed," "peak," "bestRank," and "series." For instance, the "peak" field details the peak year, count, rank, and per million for a name, while "series" provides yearly data.
Parameters vary by endpoint but generally include "name," "year," "sex," and "place." For example, the "GET A name count and rank in every state for one year" endpoint allows users to specify a name and year to retrieve state-specific data.
Response data is structured in JSON format, with hierarchical organization. For example, the "GET The top names for a year" endpoint returns a list of names ranked by count, with each name's details nested within the results array.
The data is sourced from the Social Security Administration (SSA), which compiles baby name statistics based on birth registrations in the United States. This ensures a comprehensive and authoritative dataset.
Typical use cases include analyzing naming trends over time, identifying popular names by state, and exploring variations of names. For instance, users can track how a name's popularity has changed across decades or compare names with similar trends.
Users can analyze trends by comparing counts and ranks across years or states. For example, by examining the "series" data, users can visualize a name's popularity trajectory over time, aiding in research or decision-making for naming.
If a name is not found, the API returns a 404 status with spelling suggestions. Users should check for typos or try alternative spellings. For endpoints returning lists, empty results indicate no data for the specified parameters, prompting users to adjust their queries.
